SOUTH ASIAN women from Bradford celebrated the Queen’s Jubilee with a special event at a Manningham community centre yesterday.
Younger and older generations came together at the Millan Centre to mark the occasion, which was also attended by Naz Shah, Labour MP for Bradford West.
The Millan Centre offers social and mental health support, aiming to provide a safe space for women in the area.
Saliha Sadiq, Vice-Chair of the Centre, said: “As people who were born and raised in this country, the Jubilee was a very proud moment for us.
“There was a lovely atmosphere and we thought it was important for all cultures to celebrate the occasion.
“It’s not just a celebration for one culture, and we wanted to highlight that – we wanted to celebrate the fact that we are part of this country.
“As women, we also want to empower each other - we are proud of the Queen and we see her as an inspiration.”
Saliha also praised Naz Shah MP for showing her support.
“It was great that Naz Shah came along. She has been a great help for the Millan Centre,” she said.
“Ms Shah also gave the Centre a lot of credit for the hard work we have been carrying out for years – helping to educate people and raise awareness of mental health.”
Elizabeth Hellmich MBE, Chair of the Millan Centre, added: “It was really nice to see people from all generations, cultures and backgrounds come together to celebrate the Jubilee.
“It was very important that we all came together to celebrate this special day.”
