THE Government’s Levelling Up agenda fails to work for Bradford, a business meeting has heard.

Property specialists met in Bradford for the first time in more than two years at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast event, and both Levelling Up and devolution were at the heart of the discussions.

The Government’s White Paper, published in February, was scrutinised as part of an event entitled ‘Changing Landscapes and Levelling Up: Property Prospects and Development Opportunities’.

Mike Cartwright, policy executive with West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, described the White Paper as a “missed opportunity” to change how government thinks and works.

“Levelling Up needs to be more than just trying to redistribute the wealth and moving government offices to the North – it’s about changing the ethos of how Whitehall and Westminster approach things and think about them,” said Mr Cartwright. “Tied into Levelling Up is the devolution programme and these two aspects need to work hand-in-glove. Metro-mayors need the powers and tools to enable local communities so genuine changes can be made to boost productivity, which is essential for Levelling Up to work.”

The next Chamber event in Bradford will see MPs Philip Davies and Judith Cummins quizzed by businesses on Friday, June 10.
