LEADING lighting designer and manufacturer Ansell Lighting has joined forces with Bradford College to support the building of a mock house for electrical installation students to practice on.

The house - which is called an Active Learning Area - has been built in the atrium of the leading West Yorkshire college and worked on by City & Guilds Level 1 and 2 students at the college, from a range of building services and construction courses, including electrical installation, plumbing, bricklaying, and joinery.

Ansell has sponsored the project, which has been named the Ansell Lighting Academy, and provided Prism Pro CCT Fire Rated Downlights for use in the kitchen and bathroom areas, as well as floodlighting, a mini floodbox, and exterior wall lights.

Electrical students will be wiring the lighting and power, while the plumbing students will be piping the services and radiators.

The house has also been ‘future-proofed’ so it can be re-used each year for new students to get active practice.

Ansell’s products are also being used in a series of bays for student assessments, and the college hopes to build a two-storey house in another part of the atrium to create one of the largest Active Learning Areas in the country.

Adam Brough, Team Leader in Electrical Installation, Plumbing and Gas at Bradford College, said: “Having a real building to practice on is invaluable for our students - instead of their practical work being restricted to boards.

“A member of the Ansell tech team came into college earlier in the year as part of a Sparks Magazine Meet-the-Lecturer day and was delighted to get on board with this project.

“Having the support of Ansell, and AICO, who have also provided some smoke detection products, has allowed us to take this project to the next level, with students getting a feel for the sort of work they will be doing when they leave college.”

Established in 1992, Ansell Lighting is a recognised market leader in the design and manufacture of high-quality luminaires for the commercial, domestic, industrial, and architectural markets.

* A RECENT Global Learning Project enabled three colleges from across the globe to work together and take advantage of the amazing opportunities this affords.

Around 79 young students from the Bradford College ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) department, Cardiff and Vale College, and Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. P. Stalmacha in Poland joined forces.

The project raised awareness about being part of a global community, and the need for quality learning resources based in different international locations.

ESOL tutor, Seima Mahmood, said:“Important interpersonal skills were gained throughout the project, which has paved the way for (students) to succeed in both life and employment. We could not be more pleased with the learners' work (and) the way they harnessed and realised their talent.”

Tutor Monika Worthington added: “We are incredibly proud of all the students involved - how they challenged themselves throughout the project, how keen they were to explore a range of different digital tools to enhance their learning and realise that digital skills unlock a whole host of opportunities for them.”

* FOLLOWING the success of last year’s Bradford School of Art annual Fashion competition, this year sees a new theme introduced.

Entrants are challenged to design a women's, men's, or kids-wear outfit using only recycled denim and carrier bags as the competition focusses on ‘sustainability.’ The topic is now vital within the fashion industry and so potential future-fashion influencers can put this into practice.

Showcasing the Entry Level 3 and Level 1 Art students, the display featured fashion, mixed-media illustration, and 3D work from City & Guilds and BTEC projects. The exhibition demonstrated a diverse mix of topics curated from themes developed in individual project work, including subjects such as wellbeing and the environment.

Prior to the show, students visited a real-life exhibition to learn about processes and techniques so they could bring their own work to life within the College. The Summer Art Exhibition utilised the ground floor of the David Hockney Building to great effect.
