A NEW scheme to introduce electric car charging points closer to people’s homes could be rolled out in West Yorkshire if a bid for Government funding is successful.
The Government recently launched a £10 million pilot competition that would see several areas across the UK chosen to test new ways of encouraging electric car use.
Authorities bidding for the cash will have to develop ways of providing convenient charging facilities for homes without off-street parking and provide access to EV charging where it doesn’t currently exist.
A report going before West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transport Committee on Friday reveals that the authority will be submitting a bid for a share of this cash next month.

The report says: “Projects under consideration include on-street charging facilities, community charging hubs (including rural provision and social housing hubs) and shared charging assets (e.g. car club and community use sites).
“The majority of locations will be on-street or on sites close to residential areas in locations with higher densities of housing without access to off-street parking.”

The focus of the bid will be on rapid charging points.
Much of the detail of the bid, including which areas of West Yorkshire will be included, will be discussed in a closed session of the meeting for “confidentiality” reasons.
