An industrial development in a city centre car park could prejudice the future regeneration of the area - according to planning officers.

Bradford Council has refused a planning application for five light industrial units on the Hey Street Car Park, a short distance from the University of Bradford student village.

Submitted by A. H. Ali, the application said the development would "provide employment / growth within this area and will positively enhance the current setting."

But the application has now been refused, with officers pointing out the site is earmarked for residential and retail development.

The Bradford City Centre Area Action Plan, published in 2017, sets out where certain developments shoudl take place in the city centre.

Doctors' surgery, filling station, shops and over 370 flats planned as part of major redevelopment of city centre site

The Hey Street car park is part of an area, between Richmond Road, Longside Lane and Listerhills Road, that is set aside for "a minimum of 200 residential units, with supporting leisure and retail floor space within the lower levels of the development."

Refusing the industrial application, officers said: "The proposal for the construction of five new industrial units would be contrary to the use of the land for residential with retail and leisure use and prejudices the site for future development.

"The principle of development is therefore unacceptable."
