A man's phone and wallet were stolen and he was beaten up when three people he trusted turned up at his flat late at night, Bradford Crown Court heard.

The two women and a man were originally charged with robbing their victim at his Keighley home on December 11, 2020, but pleaded guilty to lesser offences.

Joanne Sinfield, 42, and David Gould, 44, who were living at an address in South Street, Keighley, at the time, were spared immediate custodial sentences today.

Sinfield had admitted theft and Gould assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

A warrant not backed for bail was issued for Amy Shackleton, 33, of Church Street, Keighley, who failed to turn up to the hearing after pleading guilty to theft.

The court heard that the victim bought a phone for £120 that day. Later on, Sinfield knocked on the door at the block of flats where he lived.

He opened it to see all three of them standing outside. When he let them in, Sinfield picked up his new phone and walked off with it.

Gould then attacked him in the communal area at the flats, punching and kicking him and causing him to fall down the steps.

The women had to walk over him to get out of the building, the court was told.

He then discovered that his wallet containing £250 was missing.

The man sustained cuts and bruises and went to hospital but no significant treatment was required.

Shackleton then obtained a full cash refund on the phone, the court was told.

Sinfield had ten previous convictions for theft but nothing since 2015.

Gould had offences of assault of driving matters on his record.

The court heard that both defendants had since taken significant steps to address their problems with alcohol.

Recorder Anthony Hawks told them: “You are both in your forties and you have ruined your lives with drink. Both of you have got to an age when you need to pack this in.”

He labelled the theft ‘mean’ and said that Gould then beat up the victim ‘for no particu-lar reason.’ He sentenced Sinfield to four months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months, with 25 rehabilitation activity days with the probation service.

Gould was jailed for 12 months, suspended for 12 months, with 10 rehabilitation activity days and a six-month alcohol treatment requirement.

“You can leave the dock unless you want to stay in there,” Recorder Hawks told them.
