A SALTAIRE micro-brewery is helping to combat plastic pollution in the world’s oceans by launching a new beer.

Salt Beer Factory, based on Bingley Road, has launched ‘The Final Straw’ which is being stocked in 500 branches of Tesco from this week.

Salt has teamed up with the world’s first plastic-offsetting service and Ocean Clean-Up organisation – Seven Clean Seas to launch the hazy craft pale ale.

The project aims to combat the issue of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, by directly donating a portion of the proceeds from every purchase.

Each four-pack of ‘The Final Straw’ sold will be funding the removal of 500g of plastic from the world’s oceans.

This will be followed by launching the collaboration in kegs to bars and pubs where every pint drank will see 100g of plastic removed from oceans.

Salt has the ambition of removing 40,000 kilograms of plastic over the next 12 months through the sale of this beer.

Nadir Zairi, Salt Beer Factory managing director, said: “This collaboration, born out of friendship, aims to raise awareness for sustainability and in particular, the issue of plastic pollution in an approachable and accessible way.

“Beer is inherently social and both brands are hoping the collaboration sparks discussion over a chilled pint or can.

“This beer is particularly special because there is a true and important purpose to it, our goal is to help remove 40,000 kilos of plastic from the ocean through the sale of this beer.”

When people buy a pint or a can of this beer, you are directly protecting the marine ecosystem, ensuring that the biodiversity that calls that ecosystem its home, is looked after.

Tom Peacock-Nazil, founder and CEO of Seven Clean Seas, said: “At Seven Clean Seas, we approach the problem on multiple fronts, firstly, we build projects that remove plastic from our oceans.

“Secondly, we work with indigenous communities to give waste management infrastructures to ensure that the plastic they use does not end up in the ocean in the first place. Lastly, we partner with businesses all over the world, to measure their plastic pollution and to help offset it.

“Marine conservation and craft beer are two of my favourite things, Salt have created an incredible beer, so when you buy a can or a pint of this pale ale, you are already contributing towards the funding of plastic removal from the ocean, this really is an ocean saving pale ale.”
