A MAN has avoided prison for an assault after he approached a woman, asked her for money and spat at her in Bradford city centre.

Richard Jefferson, 46, of Grattan Road, Bradford, appeared in court on one charge of assault by beating.

He was committed to prison for 12 weeks, suspended for 12 months, and was convicted of assaulting a woman by beating at Centenary Square, on April 9,2022.

Jefferson was ordered to pay £150 compensation and £85 costs for the offence.

He was given the suspended sentence as the offence was deemed so serious due to his previous convictions and that he approached the victim for money and spat at her.

Jefferson pleaded guilty and was sentenced at Bradford & Keighley Magistrates’ Court on May 4, 2022.
