BRAMHOPE Community Run will take place this weekend to raise money for two charities.

After a successful event last year, which was attended by 55 runners and raised nearly £11,000, Tariq Qadeer at Bramhope Village News is organising the run again for Sunday, May 15.

The event will start outside Tariq's shop at the cross at 10am and after going through the village, will finish at the village hall where the runners and their supporters will be able to have refreshments.

The run is organised to raise money for children's cancer charity The Candlelighters Trust. There will also be a small donation to the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal which is building its third hospital in Pakistan to treat most patients free of charge.

Village News which is owned by Tariq organises a number of charity events each year, including "run a mile" in March for Sports Relief, half marathons, village runs and the Yorkshire three peaks walk for The Candlelighters trust, as well as IKCA and pub quiz nights for BBC children in Need appeal.

Tariq said his fundraising events had been supported and attended by hundreds of "amazing" volunteers from the village and he said he was "utterly grateful" to all those who had taken part in his events over the years.

He said: "They have worked tirelessly to train for these events and have given their time and money for a lot of good causes."

He added that he was "humbled and grateful" to the "wonderful community" in the village as well as friends and family of volunteers who had been kind and generous with their support and donations.

So far the village shop has raised more than £100,000 for charities - including £52,000 for the Candlelighters Trust, £15,000 for the Imran Khan Cancer appeal and nearly £20,000 for the BBC Children in Need Appeal. Other charities supported by the newsagents include the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal, Heart Research UK, Cancer Research UK, Dementia UK, Prostate Cancer UK and Sue Rider UK. Tariq has set a target of £4,500 for this year's run and is asking everyone to support the event and donate whatever they can to help reach the goal. Wellwishers can donate in the shop or online at www.justgiving.com/bramhoperun. Villagers are being urged to show their support on Sunday by coming out of their houses and encouraging the runners by cheering them on.
