ROB Brydon is many things - comedian, actor, panel show presenter, impressionist - and the voice of ads for pretty much everything, from Tango to Toilet Duck.

He's also an impressive singer, with the rich, velvety vocal range that only a Welshman can truly embrace.

In his lovely show A Night of Songs and Laughter, Rob treated us to a hugely entertaining mix of crowd-pleasers and showtunes, from the likes of Tom Waits, Neil Diamond, Elvis and Sir Tom Jones, backed by a terrific eight-piece band.

Along the way Rob told us stories of his life, from growing up in Porthcawl and gearing up for his first kiss, in a school production of Guys and Dolls (Sarah Brown to his Sky Masterson), to his work as a DJ, voice-over artist ("Have a break, have a Kit Kat") and actor, and his friendship with Steve Coogan (with a hilarious rendition of the Spanish dubbed version of their TV gem The Trip).

Between the songs came quickfire quips, poking gentle fun at the audience, not least the silver-haired dominance of the demographic: "What is it that attracts the old and the infirm to my shows? Would you all feel more comfortable sitting in a semi-circle against the wall?"

Charles and Barbara, aged 87 and 88, on the front row were good sports, along with a pair of young brothers and 'the Two Gareths". Rob even opened the second half with an amusing song he'd penned in the interval referencing various audience members he'd singled out.

In and among the ad-libbing and joshing were snippets of the legendary Rob Brydon impressions, including Ken Bruce and Ronnie Corbett. There were touching moments too; recalling the birth of his first child, he sang Billy Joel's Lullabye (Goodnight my Angel), and in tribute to his friend, the late great Barry Cryer, he gave us Bring Him Home from Les Mis with a witty twist - I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue-style.

Watching Rob Brydon on stage feels like being in safe hands. He's a razor sharp wit, and a slick, multi-talented entertainer, and he seems like a really nice bloke. This was a show with cracking songs, lots of laughter, and great warmth.

Give this man his own Saturday night TV show!
