WEST YORKSHIRE Police is reminding people who are hard of hearing of the support they offer, in the wake of Deaf Awareness Week.
Those who are deaf or speech-impaired may face additional barriers when reporting crime or getting in touch with the emergency services.
The emergencySMS service allows people who may face those barriers to send an SMS text message to the 999 service, which will then be passed to the police, in an emergency situation.
To use the service, people must pre-register online. More information can be found here.
People can also contact the emergency services using a Relay Assistant on a textphone through Relay UK (Text Relay).
Using the Relay UK app, people can simply press the 999 button and then confirm to make an emergency call.
In non-emergencies, people can use the 101 Live Chat system, an online text and typed based service where they can make contact with West Yorkshire Police’s Contact Management Unit.
People can also contact Typetalk on 18001 101.
Deaf Awareness Week runs from 2 May to 8 May.
