DRIVERS face delays on the M62 this morning.

There is heavy traffic on the eastbound carriageway between Chain Bar and Gildersome, with congestion back to Hartshead Moor Services.

Roadworks on the motorway have been causing major disruption and National Highways said it's doing all it can to minimise the impact.

Monique Kibara, National Highways Project Sponsor, said: “This week we are continuing to install the roadworks that we’ll use to upgrade the central reservation barrier, including the temporary safety barriers in this area, to keep motorists and road workers safe. To do this, some overnight closures are needed. Once this is complete we will start the main works in earnest.

“The upgrade is scheduled for completion this winter but if it is possible to complete this sooner we will.

“Once finished, the upgraded barriers will improve journeys, making the road even safer and reducing the duration of incident-related congestion.

“Again, we apologise for any delays experienced by drivers in these early stages of the roadworks and are doing all we can to keep them to a minimum.

"In the meantime, we advise drivers to check conditions before they set out and avoid journeys at peak times wherever possible.”
