A NEW exhibition reflecting on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has gone on display at the Impressions Gallery in Centenary Square in Bradford

The exhibition, titled Care | Contagion | Community - Self & Other, opened this month and will be on display until July 9.

A spokesperson for the Impressions Gallery said: "Continuing our season of reflection on the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, we present Care | Contagion | Community – Self & Other, an Autograph touring exhibition and commissioning project."

Initiated during the first national lockdown in spring 2020, Autograph commissioned ten visual artists to create new work responding to the wider contexts of the Covid-19 crisis.

Using primarily photography and film, the artists reflect carefully and critically, often very personally, on the impact of the pandemic, their lived experiences, and the inevitability of change.

The Autograph touring exhibition is curated by Renée Mussai, Mark Sealy and Bindi Vora.

Anne McNeill, Director of Impressions Gallery, said: "Impressions Gallery is delighted to be showing Care, Contagion, Community – Self & Other straight after it's highly acclaimed national premier at Autograph's gallery in Hackney, London. This exhibition gives us insights into the importance of community, family, home and belonging during lockdown and the on-going Covid crisis."

A spokesperson for Autograph said: “Located as the symbolic bond between care and community, the word ‘contagion’ – its original meaning being ‘together’, and ‘to touch’ – evokes images of close contact, as well as ideas of potential exposure and transmission. What are the new implications of touch, of close relationships between the self and the other, or the lack thereof in a time of isolation and separation?

“How might we be better together as a community in the future? How to protect those who risk their lives in their commitment to care for others, working on multiple frontlines? What kinds of support structures might we need to help us navigate such unprecedented times, both collectively and individually?”

A number of artists are featured in the exhibition, including Othello De’Souza-Hartley whose artist commission reflects on the notion of stillness, loss and how to navigate grief.

In his artist commissions, photographer Dexter McLean reflects on the impact Covid-19 has had on the community that surrounds him in his day-to-day life.

Aida Silvestri has created an experimental body of work that explores the impact of Covid-19 on frontline workers of colour, linking the present with the past.

Poulomi Desai’s commissions consider how people might attempt to control the uncontrollable.
