A PIECE of Bradford motoring history is up for sale on an auction website.

A maroon and black-coloured Jowett Bradford classic light van dating back to 1947 is up for grabs on eBay.

The 75-year-old van has a 1,005cc engine and includes a three-speed box and has the registration NU0307.

Due to its age it is classed as an historic vehicle so there is no need for it to be taxed or have an MOT.

The right-hand drive vehicle has clocked up a total mileage of 6,700.

The van is not up for auction on eBay but instead will go to a buyer who will meet the £8,495 asking price.

The advert for the van on eBay says: “It is great for advertising your business - sign write and park near your premises then will only need Classic insurance, people won’t be able to help not to look.”

Jowett Motors was one of Bradford’s most famous companies, which made a range of motor cars and commercial vehicles at a factory in the Bradford district.

In 1906, Bradford brothers Benjamin and William Jowett designed and built their first car.

Early Jowetts were built in Girlington, Bradford, before the company moved to Idle in 1920, where it stayed until 1954.

The maroon and black Jowett van is being sold by Stephen Winstanley, from Standish, a village in Wigan, Greater Manchester, who says he has already had interest from people looking to buy the vehicle.

He said: “I bought it off the widow of a man who owned it.

“I have just put it on eBay for the last couple of weeks.

“It’s not up for auction, it’s up there for someone to buy.

For 70 years old, it is in quite good nick. It is nice under the bonnet. It’s a nice bit of history for someone

“You don’t see many Jowetts up for sale. They are very rare.

“I’m selling it myself as I have always been interested in classic cars.”

The Jowett’s heritage has been celebrated with a number of reunion events of the Jowett Car Club over the decades since the company closed.

The northern section of the club was set up in 1962, with its 50th anniversary milestone celebrated in 2012 by a convoy of 20 Jowetts making their way from the former factory site in Idle – now a Morrisons supermarket – to Bradford Industrial Museum, where a reunion event took place.

Anyone interested in buying the vintage van is urged to call Mr Winstanley on 07900 687576.
