A NUMBER of new Scout groups for young children have been launched in Bradford South.

Squirrels - the youngest section of the Scout movement, for four and five-year-olds - have been introduced in Buttershaw, Clayton village, Great Horton and Clayton Heights, with Low Moor, Wyke and Shelf to follow over the next few weeks.

The establishment of the groups - the most recent being the 69th Bradford South in Buttershaw - marks a major success following challenges during the pandemic.

“Squirrels can achieve anything they set their minds to - and they have lots of fun along the way,” said Bev Dickinson, district commissioner for Bradford South Scouts.

“The hour-long sessions will be a brilliant opportunity for young people to take their first step into being part of Scouts, and they’ll help everyone get ready for the adventure of school too. Sessions will be packed with outdoor activities, fun, games, badges, laughter, and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life."

Squirrels have the opportunity to earn 12 activity badges plus numerous awards. Badges include Exciting Experiments, Feel Good, Be Active, Storytime and Brilliant Builder.

“There is plenty for the young people to do and be rewarded for,” says Bev. “Each badge is packed with wow and wonder, perfect for anyone who’s ever asked ‘Why?’ or ‘Why not?'. Youngsters will tell stories and play games, get active and explore the outdoors, become a brilliant builder and a super chef. There’s something for everyone.”

Assistant district commissioner (support) in Bradford South Scouts Stephen Rawlinson, said: “The last two years have been a real challenge to scouting, as for many charities, however scouting has continued during this difficult time with weekly meetings happening virtually via Zoom.

“We are a real family in scouting and through team work we now have a thriving group in Buttershaw which we are very proud of. It’s a pleasure and so rewarding to see so many people involved and enjoying scouting.”

He added: “Dedicated volunteer leaders have used their creative skills to ensure young people enjoy the fun and friendships that scouting offers. We’re putting a lot of time, effort, support and training in to benefit all young people in Bradford South, offering all five sections: Squirrel Scouts, Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts and Explorer Scouts.

“Scouting touches so many people’s lives. It offers so much to young people both in terms of the skills for life and opportunities. Most important are the activities, the experiences, the friendships and the fun that is had along the journey.”
