PEOPLE are petitioning for speed cameras to be installed on a major road between Bradford and Leeds after a young man lost his life in a crash earlier this week.

On Monday, 26-year-old Joshua Wilson was getting off the bus on Bradford Road, Pudsey, when he was hit by a car.

Despite receiving medical attention, Mr Wilson sadly died at the scene, where floral tributes from family and friends now lay.

Residents are now urging Leeds City Council to install permanent speed cameras on the road to prevent similar incidents from happening.

Abi Jansen Van Rensburg, 26, set up the Change.org petition on Tuesday. It has already received nearly 2,000 signatures.

She said: “The road is known to residents in the area as being notoriously dangerous, and I think if there were safety measures in place, this never would have happened.”

Other residents shared their thoughts on the online petition.

One person commented: “I live locally, and this road is treacherous.”

Another added: “Road safety is essential and having witnessed the recent accident, we need to install some traffic management and speed reduction measures before another incident.”

Ms Rensburg added that although the police often set up mobile speed cameras, permanent measures need to be put in place.

A spokesperson from Leeds City Council said: “We are very saddened to hear of the collision on Bradford Road. Our thoughts are with the victim’s family at this tragic time.

“Our joint work has led in recent years to the introduction of two mobile speed camera bays on A647 Bradford Road, one on either side of Thornbury Barracks, which have enabled the safe deployment of mobile speed enforcement vans to operate on this section of road.

“The West Yorkshire Safety Camera Partnership oversees the installation and operation of safety cameras in West Yorkshire.

“Leeds City Council is pushing for a more flexible local approach when it comes to deploying static cameras and average speed camera systems on the city’s roads.

“Unfortunately, the Department for Transport Review is taking longer than expected and we will be chasing this up this week to ensure swift progress is made.”
