NOISE-RELATED motoring offences in West Yorkshire have increased by 78 per cent over the last five years, according to new research.

Admiral Car Insurance analysed crime figures from a Freedom of Information request submitted in December, finding that West Yorkshire Police had recorded a total of 388 noise-related motoring offences since 2016.

The most common noise offence in the region was sounding the horn while stationary, the research also found, with 323 instances of this crime recorded between 2016 and 2021.

This was followed by leaving the engine on while stationary (210 offences) and, in third place, modifying a car to increase the sound made (109 offences).

Researchers at Admiral sent Freedom of Information requests to every police force in the country, with 34 out of 49 forces replying within the allocated timeframe of three months.

There were 10 different noise-related offences considered, including having no silencer for an exhaust system on a car and generally causing excessive noise in a vehicle.

The number of recorded offences in West Yorkshire increased year-on-year from 2016, until seeing a decline between 2020 and 2021.

The worst year for recorded offences was 2019 to 2020, where 100 instances of noise-related motor offences were recorded by West Yorkshire Police.
