A BRADFORD district primary school has launched an appeal to raise funds to redevelop its playground.

Saltaire Primary School is looking to convert its current playground into an area featuring a host of different areas to appeal to pupils at break time.

It has started an online appeal on JustGiving with a £10,000 target towards helping the project.

The Albert Road school has already raised around £9,000 separately through a host of donations including from a parent and the Co-op.

As part of the work, the school aims to build a covered outdoor classroom/learning space for up to 30 pupils and a garden area where the school’s 420 children, aged between four and 11, can help grow their own fruit and vegetables.

The school continued its fundraising efforts by holding a bunny run event on-site on Thursday, April 7, as it counts down to breaking up for the Easter holidays on April 11.

Headteacher Rob Whitehead says the redevelopment of the school’s outdoor space would give more variety for pupils and hopes the area will look different by the end of the next academic year in July 2023.

He said: “We want to change the landscape and give it more variety.

“It’s a blank canvas at the moment. It is a big concrete space.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

“Our playground needs some TLC. Our PTA, the Friends of Saltaire Primary School, are really trying to make a difference.

“We want to break the space up a bit and put some more garden space in there to grow fruit and vegetables.

“With the Covid pandemic, we prioritised the indoor space of the buildings at the school to make sure the children felt comfortable.

“But the time has come to realise that outdoor learning is important too.

We are aiming to make sure that by the end of the next academic year, the outdoor space at the school would look quite different

On its JustGiving page, The Friends of Saltaire Primary School posted: “Along with the school, FOSPS will be raising money to completely redevelop the schools play area to its full potential.

“In the plans is an outdoor classroom, an all-weather pitch, gardens, playground equipment and much more.

“We would appreciate any donations you, your friends, family and loved ones would like to donate to us and we'll be holding fundraising events throughout the next three years to aid us in our goals.”
