DEVELOPERS have put in yet another bid to build houses on a green belt site in Burley-in-Wharfedale.

In March last year an application by Jomast Construction to build 49 homes on Church Field, off Weston View in the village was refused by Bradford Council on eight grounds, including inappropriate development in the green belt and that ‘the development would cause substantial harm to the Burley-in-Wharfedale Conservation Area and the setting of the adjacent listed buildings'.

Despite this ruling the construction company has submitted a new planning application for the same site for a development of 43 houses with a car park and public open space.

In a design and access statement to accompany the application the developer says it is seeking to provide affordable housing in an area which has seen a historic undersupply for the past five years and beyond.

It adds the provision of a community car park will provide a new formal parking option for visitors to the village, removing the need for significant on street parking within the Conservation Area.

It says the development would provide a "new defensible edge to the settlement, with a strong landscaping scheme" and open up "a large portion of the Green Belt to public use".

Talking about the advantages of the scheme it adds it would provide "a range of house types which are currently in demand in the local area, including bungalows and semi-detached properties, at an affordable price in the least affordable housing area in Bradford".

The previous application by Jomast for the site was opposed by all district councillors, the local MP, and attracted well over 180 objections from residents.

Burley Parish Council also advised refusal of the application and it is advising refusal of the new application.

Jan Lepley, chair of Burley Parish Council said: "Jomast Developments have again applied for permission to build 43 dwellings - prior to the application they approached both the Parish Council and the Vicar of St Mary’s to have pre planning discussions. Both parties refused to meet with them. The Parish Council refused because we strongly believe there should be no development of any nature in this area.

"The Parish Councils’ planning committee will be discussing the new application on Monday 25th April. If you would like to comment during public participation time and or listen to the discussion, please join us in the Queens Hall at 7.30 pm."
