TELEGRAPH & Argus readers seem split in their reaction to the news Richard Dunn Centre has been awarded listed status.

The building was due to be demolished later this year but was given listed status by Historic England yesterday.

The heritage body has described the cavernous domed building, which shut as a leisure centre in 2019, as a “bold and accomplished design for a 1970s local leisure.”

The listing throws the future of the site into doubt, as it means the building is now among the most protected structures in the city.

The T&A conducted a poll last night asking readers, "Do you think the Richard Dunn should be preserved?"

An overwhelming 2,780 people responded to the poll, with 55 per cent feeling it has to be preserved.

Many Bradfordians welcomed the news, labelling the building "iconic" and "unique" to the city.

Hadrian Briggs said: "I was heartbroken when I found out that they were going to tear it down. That building is as famous as Listers Mill in representing Bradford."

Heather Fawcett added: "Great news, you can always get your bearings by spotting it."

"I should think so, it’s iconic and a landmark that can be seen from miles," said Angie Petty.

James Murray said: "Good, it's a unique building with lots of history and is known to just about everybody who has ever lived in Bradford, stupid decision to demolish it. It should be turned into something and the grounds should be redone."

"It never should have closed down in the first place," said Joanne Skelton.

Usman Bey added: "I'm actually so glad it's become a grade listed building. It was so ahead of its time."

Peter Tate said: "A stunning building. It was way beyond its years when it was built. Save it, use it and value it."

"Happy memories. Why demolish it?" said Pat Bleau

"It’s a landmark. I’m glad it’s now listed," added Caroline Walker.

Lucy Wood said: "As long as it gets used and isn't allowed to get run down."

Meanwhile, others were not too impressed. Instead, they claim the decision is a "disgrace" and have criticised the current condition of the centre.

Zeeshan Khan said: "Oh great now what to do with it. We’ve got lots of really nice old buildings in this city doing nothing.

Martin Clarke added: "Pull it down and build something that is useful in its place. This is why places like Bradford can not move forward because people want to keep old things that are simply not fit for any purpose."

"The listing is a disgrace. What an eyesore," said Jonny Pianko.

Robert Lang added: "One of the ugliest buildings around Bradford. Unbelievable that it has been given Grade II listed status. Baffling decision."

"Oh no it’s a dreadful building," said Gail Cockcroft.

Jules Hallam said: Seriously? A Grade II listed building, it's a bloody eyesore.

Elaine Lumb added: "What a load of rubbish how can this be made listed. It's just another rotting eyesore for Bradford."

"What an eyesore needs pulling down," added Billy Firth.
