SOMEONE rang the 999 emergency line...because they wanted a lift home from police and then swore at call handlers.

West Yorkshire Police's Contact Management Centre shared details of the call to highlight the importance of using 999 for emergency calls only.

The team often tweets some of the more unusual phone calls they receive from the general public.

In its latest example, the team said: "When ringing 999 to request a lift home because you've no way home.

“Please don't also be abusive and swear at the call takers when you are informed it is not a police matter.

“It won’t increase the chances of police giving you a lift home! #Not999.”

Previous calls have included someone phoned 999 to ask them to book some driving lessons for them.
