A spokesperson fro West Yorkshire Police said: "Emergency services were called to the M1 junction 40 at Lofthouse at about 2.17pm today following reports of a man in distress on a barrier above motorway carriageways.
"Lane closures were put in place while police spoke with the male, and traffic diversions were established.
"He came down safely at about 3.46pm
"Officers are now in the process of reopening closed lane at the junction and police want to thank drivers for their patience and understanding."
