A BRADFORD nurse who worked through the height of the pandemic has published a book about her memories and experiences on the job.

Claudia Oliveira, 36 who works as Urology Specialist at the BRI spent a year jumping from the ICU to Covid wards to surgical wards and stroke units, as immense pressures fell on the NHS.

She documented her experiences and has now self-published her book called Covid Wars- In the Mind of a NHS Nurse.

Claudia said:“This book has been written to help other nurses so that they know that we all relate to each other, and we’ve all been through the same tough experiences.

“It was a struggle, some days we watched people die, other days we would see people being discharged and recovering and some days we would see both.

“This book encompasses the feelings of perseverance, hope and resilience which everyone was feeling at the time.”

Claudia initially put pen to paper in May 2020, when she began documenting the harrowing experiences she was facing and aiming to offload as she began another day on the wards.

This book touches on a range of topics including loss during the pandemic and how thousands of nurses put others before themselves to reduce the spread of COVID.

Claudia said: “My father passed away in Portugal during the pandemic, it was during October or November time when I really started writing the book.

“I couldn’t go to Portugal for the funeral because travel was so difficult and there were so many restrictions.

“I was a nurse working with Covid patients, I had to be even more careful so then I couldn’t go.

“A lot of my colleagues were saying the same thing, they were facing losses and unable to go to funerals, even in the UK with all the travel restrictions it was really difficult and nurses had a really hard time.

The cover of the book was inspired by the ICU wards at the start of the pandemic and illustrated by Claudia.

“This really isn’t about money; I just want people to be aware of what nurses went through on the front line and how difficult the job was.

“All nurses can relate to this experience and I think the general public wants to know what it was like on the front line.”

The book has been published under the pseudonym Nina Costa and is available to purchase on Amazon as a paperback and Kindle.
