A PHOTO taken at a family wedding was the turning point for Lisa Brooke. It prompted her to start a slimming journey that transformed her life, when she lost five stone in 18 months - and kept it off for over eight years.

Now Lisa, 46, is using her success to help other people achieve their weight loss dreams. She joined Slimming World 10 years ago and dropped from 14st 9.5 to 9st 9.5. Now a Slimming World consultant, she has re-opened groups in Wyke and Wibsey.

Government figures reveal that more than one in four adults are obese and it’s estimated that, by 2034 this will be one in three. Says Lisa:“Obesity is a huge issue and living through a pandemic hasn’t helped. When I joined Slimming World, I never dreamed I’d end up helping others to lose weight. After losing five stone it’s a privilege to pass on the experience and understanding so I can give members the support they need. Support is the most important thing. It all starts with feeling you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost five stone without the weekly encouragement of my Consultant and group. Setting targets, sharing recipes and working together to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important.

“Like a lot of slimmers, I’d tried to lose weight many times by following numerous diets but I got tired of feeling hungry. I knew Slimming World worked, I’d been a member before and never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat and fish, and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I found myself eating more food, for less calories without having to count them! I’d found a simple way to lose weight without starving myself and still being able to cook favourite meals like Shepherd’s pie and curries.

“Being active is important too. Our Body Magic programme shows people, many with unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school, how they can build it into their daily routine without having to go to the gym or take up running. Everything counts, from walking to gardening to washing the car. I love walking and continued in lockdown.”

Slimming World Consultants are trained in healthy eating and physical activity programmes and how to use group support to empower members. “Becoming a self-employed franchisee was a great option as I wanted a job that was flexible,” says Lisa.

Siobhan Bower, Slimming World Team Developer, says: “Consultants are chosen for their positive outlook. With experience of being a successful member and her warm personality and sense of humour, Lisa's an amazing support, cheering members all the way to their target weight.” * Lisa's Slimming World groups are Tuesdays at Wyke Methodist Church and Thursdays at The Rattlers Club, Wibsey.
