THERE have been four “silver speeders” in court for driving offences in Bradford so far in 2022 – all aged 80 and over.

The speedsters, all aged between 80 and 86, received fines and points on their licences for the offending, with one even being banned from driving.

All five have appeared at Bradford and Keighley Magistrates’ Court since the turn of the year.

The eldest offender to appear before the courts was 86-year-old Jill Riley, of Beacon Street, Ilkley, who was called up on February 3.

She didn’t turn up to court and two offences were proved in her absence; driving without a valid licence, and breaching the 30mph speed limit in her Audi A5 S Line in Oakworth Road, Keighley, on August 10.

For the offences, she was handed five points on her licence, fined £330, an ordered to pay costs of £90 and a victim surcharge of £33.

Next in was Afroza Begum, 83, who failed to give information relating to the identification of a driver when asked to on September 3, relating to her BMW 1 Series M Sport in Whetley Hill, Bradford.

Begum, of Laxford Close, Birmingham, was ordered to pay a £120 fine, costs of £90 and a victim surcharge of £34, and was also handed six points on her licence after admitting the offences.

A charge of driving at 38mph in a 30mph zone in Whetley Hill in August was withdrawn at the hearing on January 26.

On January 14, 82-year-old Albert Barraclough was found to have driven at 39mph in a 30mph zone of Dewsbury Road, Wakefield, on May 30 in his Saab.

Barraclough, of Field Head Lane, Birstall, was also convicted of speeding at 38mph in a 30mph zone on June 3 in Wakefield Road, Kinsley, and of driving on the hard shoulder of the M62 near Junction 30 for Rothwell on June 25.

He was fined £220 for each offence, plus £90 costs and a £66 victim surcharge, for a total fine of £816, and was banned from driving for six months due to repeat offending.

No separate penalty was handed down for two further offences of driving without a valid licence.

Next up was Michael Leonard, 80, of Moorside Parade, Adwalton, who was convicted of failing to provide information about the identity of a driver who committed an offence on August 27.

This related to his Ford Fiesta on July 26 in Elland Road, Leeds, and he was fined £660, told to pay costs £90 and a £66 victim surcharge, and handed six points on his licence.

A further offence of speeding, 36mph in a 30mph zone, was withdrawn.
