A MEMORIAL garden in Undercliffe has been damaged.

One of the benches paid for by churchgoers and local businesses was set on fire.

It is believed that in the late hours of Saturday evening, one of the three benches in the garden was burned.

Covid impacted thousands of families across Bradford and to pay tribute, St Andrew’s Church in Undercliffe set some land aside for a memorial garden in memory of all those who lost their lives to Covid.

The garden had three benches which were bought through donations from residents, churchgoers and businesses in the area.

Jenny Lancaster, 74, who was passing the memorial garden and noticed the burned bench, said: “I was walking by and I just glanced in that direction, because people had planted 3000 bulbs there and I wanted to see what stage they were at.

“I saw that one of the benches had been set on fire.

“Somebody has done something terrible and it shows they don’t have respect for the people who lost their lives to Covid and their families.

“This space was for people to reflect and to find peace and for us to pay tribute and someone has chosen to ruin that."

West Yorkshire Police have been contacted for comment.
