PLANS for temporary portable cabins to remain at Bradford Crown Court to aid social distancing have been approved by Bradford Council.

The two Portakabins sit in the car park of the city's top court, to "enable safe jury assembly and provide space for deliberation, in light of social distancing".

The plans add: "The proposal will support the Courts Covid recovery plan to ease the backlog of cases within the judiciary system, thus the proposal has public benefits."

Permission for the temporary cabins was approved, and they can remain in place until the end of January 2024 if necessary, planning officers said.

The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the courts compounded existing issues with case backlogs in the justice system following a decade of austerity.
