FIRE SERVICES were called to a house in the early hours of today after an unattended candle left a property ‘uninhabitable’.

Three fire stations from Bradford arrived at the property on Masefield Avenue after a call was made at 12:26am regarding a fire.

Crews from Fairweather Green, Bingley, and Shipley all attended the domestic property fire.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Upon arrival, the crew had been notified that the fire was on the ground floor.

“The front door was open, and the family had safely evacuated the premises as smoke issued from the house.”

The fire was caused by a candle that had been left unattended in the living room, setting the ground floor on fire.

The occupants of the household were already safe outside when the fire crews arrived.

A spokesperson from Fairweather Green Fire Station said two cats were in the house, one got out but the other died.

He said: "One was in a bad way but we administered oxygen and it was taken to the vets."

The fire service also issued a warning about the dangers of candles.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “We want to make the public aware of the dangers surrounding candles.

“We would urge people to use candles safely and not to leave them unattended."
