And three fire engines and two aerial appliances are still present this morning.

Only the four outer walls of the building remain standing following the inferno, which broke out at around noon yesterday.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said more than 20 crews – including an aerial ladder from Bradford, specialist units and firefighters from neighbouring brigades – were involved in fighting the blaze.

Initial reports indicated the fire had started in the roof, but when firefighters arrived at the scene - in Dalton Lane - they discovered the ground floor was alight.

Dalton Lane was closed.

Town mayor Councillor Julie Adams described the fire as "devastating". "It is such a beautiful and iconic building," she said.

Keighley East district councillors were at the scene providing assistance, and Bradford Council opened-up the leisure centre to anyone needing shelter.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service thanked local residents "for their patience" and partner organisations and agencies for their support.

A police statement is awaited in relation to the cause of the fire.
