A LADIES-only music event is taking place in Bradford to help women on the local music scene network and build confidence.

Tanya Vital and Sinead Campbell, two Bradford women who have worked in the music industry for several years, decided it was time to give more women in Bradford the opportunity to expand their network and build their confidence.

The event, Level Up, will be taking place on March 10 at the Underground and doors open from 7pm.

Sinead, whose artist name is Premaura and works for Bradford Music Hub said: “Tanya and I got together and we really wanted to put something on for international women’s week.

“We wanted a safe space to hold the event, where women felt relaxed and confident to speak and network.”

The event will have an expert panel discussing the issue of the under-representation of women in music and the extra challenges they face while trying to get onto the scene.

There will be performances throughout the night and guest speakers.

Sinead added: “We just want people to have fun and make friends.

“So often when we speak with artists, they say the biggest thing they lack is confidence and we want to help them overcome that.

“They say they suffer with Imposter Syndrome and don’t feel comfortable putting themselves out there, but we need to make the space inclusive so that they don’t feel this way.

“Another big issue is that a lot of the leading people in music, the producers, sound engineers, videographers- they’re all mostly men and that can be quite difficult to work with especially if you already lacking in confidence.

“I myself have experienced this, it can be patronising and we hear a lot of stories about misogyny in the industry.”

Tanya said: "It has been my life's work to speak out about and create inclusion for northern artists. The lack of representation in the arts for northern marginalised groups is exactly what spurred me on to create my company Vital Culture UK ltd.

“Here we have a vibrant city full of innovative arts and culture and yet women are still vastly underrepresented when we come to commission DJ's, Promoters, Rappers, Bands and vocalists.

“Our event is going to be the beginning of a movement, to gather as many creative minds together as possible, unpack the challenges faced by women in the music sector in our city and create a plan of action to address those challenges".
