A FORMER British soldier from the Spen Valley is prepared to leave his children and partner to go on the frontline and fight the war in Ukraine.

Earlier this week, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said she would support British nationals who choose to go to the Eastern European Country to help fight the Russian invasion.

It comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the formation of a new “international legion” to help defend his country.

Mr Zelensky has appealed to foreign volunteers to come forward promising them arms to fight against the invading army.

One of those people interested in joining is a man, who wished to remain anonymous from the Spen Valley, has previously spent time serving his country over in Afghanistan.

Having had army friends already go join the war effort in Ukraine, he is keen to follow suit as soon as possible.

He said: "Ukraine has been brought to its knees. I would like to use the training that I have to help them.

"I don't want to go over there blind eyed. I want to know what the situation is. I don't want to provide aid, I want to be on the frontline and fight.

"I have tried the embassy numerous times and not got through.

"I have army mates who are already over there. They have not taken their phones because of security reasons, so I have not spoken to them.

"I have previously fought in wars that I don't personally agree with before. I served ten years in Afghanistan.

"My partner is very supportive of what I want to do.

"I rung the embassy 15 times yesterday and got no answer. It has become frustrating."
