SAINSBURY’S is set to close the café at its supermarket in Bradford as part of shake-up that will see 200 cafés close across the country.

The supermarket announced today that it is proposing to close the cafés this Spring with 2,000 employees affected by the changes, and the Bradford store in Greengates is one of those impacted.

The Sainsbury’s in Keighley, however, will see its café retained as the business reviews its rollout plans.

Sainsbury’s said the employees losing their jobs will be prioritised to fill vacancies in their stores and encouraged to apply for other roles in the wider business, and all were spoken to today about it.

It also announced plans to close less popular hot food counters in 34 of its stores and to simplify the operation of its bakeries in 54 stores, with those employees going into a consultation.

It comes as the supermarket chain plans to rollout food halls at some supermarkets, with 30 Restaurant Hubs set to open and feature the likes of Carluccio’s, Gourmet Burger Kitchen, and Ed’s Diner eateries.

A further 30 Starbucks Coffee shops are also set to open in the coming year, doubling the existing number in its stores.

The Bradford store currently has its café which will soon close, along with a filling station and Argos, while at Keighley the café will remain along with its filling station, Argos, pharmacy and a bureau de change.

Simon Roberts, chief executive, said: “We know customers like the convenience of being able to have a drink, a snack or a meal while they’re doing their shopping – and they love the range of food and brands on offer at The Restaurant Hub and from Starbucks.

“We are totally focused on improving what we can deliver for our customers and at the same time, working hard to make our business simpler.

“We are really excited about this new customer offer we will be rolling out over the next two to three years across many of our stores.

“As we go through this period of transition, we have taken the difficult decision to close 200 of our cafés next month.

“We have spoken to all colleagues affected by these changes today and are absolutely committed to supporting them in any way we can during this uncertain time.

“Of course, we understand this is very unsettling for our colleagues, but we must keep adapting our business to make sure we are offering customers the best possible food and drink at affordable prices.”

Locally, Sainsbury’s cafés will also remain open at stores in Harrogate, Wakefield and Dewsbury.
