A COUNCILLOR has spoken of his disappointment that another crash has occurred on a road in his local town centre.

On Thursday evening, a pedestrian was knocked over in a hit and run at the junction of High Street and Market Place in Heckmondwike.

It comes after two people were taken to hospital following a crash on Market Street in July 2021 and two men were seriously injured in a collision on High Street in February 2020.

On this occasion, the man was airlifted to hospital with serious head injuries and, as of yesterday lunchtime, remains there in a critical but stable condition.

The incident took place at 6.17pm after a dark coloured car was in collision with the 24-year-old who had stepped off a traffic island in the road.

The vehicle, which did not stop at the scene, had been travelling from the High Street and carried on up Westgate.

Road closures were put in place at the scene and lifted just before midnight.

It is understood police are still searching for the car and its driver.

Heckmondwike councillor Steven Hall (Lab) said the man was flown to Leeds General Infirmary last night following the collision outside The Dandy Lion.

Cllr Hall also added that he will be mentioning this incident at a meeting with Batley and Spen MP Kim Leadbeater tonight.

He said: "Yet again it is another horrible incident which has happened in Heckmondwike.

"We have had loads of works done in Heckmondwike town centre in the last year since the other incidents.

"The sooner the police and council look at what happened, the sooner we can see if we can do anything.

"It might be something that we can't do anything about because no matter what we do safety wise if people aren't going to abide by the rules, we are a bit stuck.

"Anybody with any footage, please come forward to the police.

"The person who was run over, I just hope they get well soon."

West Yorkshire Police also encouraged witnesses of the incident to get in contact either via a phone call or online through their website.

A spokesperson said: "Anyone who has information or dashcam footage which could assist the enquiry is asked to contact PC 6254 Varley at the Eastern Area Roads Policing Unit on 101 referencing police log 1255 of February 24.
