POLICE have made arrests and carried out crime prevention patrols as investigations continue into a serious assault in Huddersfield.

Two men, aged 29 and 27, have been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding after a man was assaulted with a bladed weapon on Keldregate, in the Deighton area of the town, on Monday evening.

The men remain in custody and the victim is still being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

In the aftermath of the incident, Huddersfield Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) officers used Section 60 powers of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 to carry out searches in the area.

These powers give a uniformed officer the authority to search people or vehicles for offensive weapons in a defined area for a set period.

No weapons were found during the operation.

Inspector Graham Dyson, of Huddersfield NPT, said: “NPT officers and colleagues from Operation Jemlock carried out enhanced patrols in the Deighton area on Wednesday night to reassure residents, following Monday’s serious assault on Keldregate.

“Colleagues from Kirklees CID continue to investigate that incident for which two men have now been arrested and are being questioned.

“Due to the nature of Monday’s attack, officers patrolling on Wednesday were given Section 60 authorisation which temporarily provided them with increased powers to conduct searches for weapons.

“My neighbourhood officers will now continue with reassurance patrols across the area and, along with partners, we will continue to support the community and listen to their concerns.

“If anyone has any information regarding gangs, violence or any other criminal activity within the area, I would encourage them to contact West Yorkshire Police or pass information via Crimestoppers.

“I would like to thank the community for all their support.

"Anyone who has information about the assault on Keldregate on Monday, 21 February and can assist enquiries is asked to contact Kirklees CID on 101, referencing crime number 13220007648.
