A JUDGE told a man to apologise to his mother for taking her Range Rover without permission and crashing into three other vehicles during a “horrendous” episode of dangerous driving around Bradford.

Zishan Ali wrote off a Mercedes Sprinter van, struck a VW Polo and injured a woman at the wheel of a Mazda while driving at speed in the city without a licence or insurance, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Ali, 26, of Kensington Street, Girlington, Bradford, pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicle taking on April 30 last year, including dangerous driving on Manchester Road and Heddon Place.

Prosecutor Nicola Hoskins said Ali’s mother woke to find her black Range Rover gone and the keys missing from her handbag.

From 11.50am, calls were made to the police about Ali driving at speed and weaving in and out of traffic.

He had three collisions attempting to squeeze past vehicles and failed to stop every time, Miss Hoskins said.

The driver of the Mazda sustained a sprained wrist. She had her mother in the car with her and they followed Ali until she spotted the Range Rover parked up. But she found his demeanour threatening and he drove off in the badly damaged vehicle, the court was told.

Miss Hoskins said Ali’s mother was very upset when she saw the state of the Range Rover, to which Recorder Anthony Hawks replied that he wasn’t surprised.

Ali had three convictions for four offences but nothing for any driving matters.

The court heard it was a prolonged piece of bad driving with disregard for the safety of others and multiple vehicles damaged.

Ali had no licence or insurance and had carried on when his damaged vehicle posed a risk to other road users and pedestrians.

In mitigation, it was stated that he was stressed because there were a lot of people in the house and he wanted to get out.

He was very remorseful, realised he had acted stupidly and was glad no one had been seriously hurt.

Recorder Hawks labelled it “a horrendous episode of driving” involving three collisions, with a vehicle written off and woman being injured.

Ali was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months.

He must attend the Thinking Skills programme for at least 21 days and undertake 15 rehabilitation activity days with the probation service.

He was banned from driving for two years.

Recorder Hawks told Ali: “Apologise to your mother.”
