A man driving on the wrong side of the road smashed into a woman’s car leaving her terrified and trapped in the wreckage, Bradford Crown Court heard.

Martin Germain mouthed “What were you doing?” as he disappeared off after causing £5,000 damage to her Renault Clio and £10,000 damage to a parked Audi A5.

Prosecutor Anthony Moore said that Germain had 33 previous convictions for 49 offences, including multiple breaches of court orders.

He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in a Ford Focus on Bonegate Road, Brighouse, on May 9 last year, breach of a restraining order and breach of a suspended sentence order.

Mr Moore said Germain, 30, of Kimberley Street, Brighouse, was given permission to drive the Focus from a woman he had been drinking with.

He took the keys and drove round Brighouse until he hit the black Renault Clio.

The court heard that the woman driver was travelling to work when she saw the Focus coming towards her on the wrong side of the road. She steered left to try to avoid a collision but it smashed into her car trapping her inside.

Germain mouthed at her and then left the scene without stopping to help her.

She managed to get out of the front passenger door, Mr Moore said.

Germain was arrested in July and denied driving the Focus or breaching the restraining order.

He was remanded in custody and sentenced on a video link to HMP Leeds.

Ken Green, Germain’s barrister, said he had used his time on remand well.

He had addressed his problems and turned his life around.

Although he had previous convictions, there were no driving offences on his record.

Judge David Hatton QC said Germain had “an appalling record” and very little regard for court orders.

The woman was terrified when he smashed into her leaving her trapped in her car. He had caused substantial damage to the Clio and the Audi before leaving the scene with-out showing any interest in how she was.

Germain was jailed for three months for breach of the restraining order and 12 months to run consecutively for dangerous driving. The four-month and seven days suspended sentence was activated in full, making a total jail term of 19 months and one week. He was banned from driving for two years and nine months and until he takes an ex-tended retest.
