THE owner of a Bradford district fish and chip shop has spoken out after being told it needs to make major improvements in its food hygiene standards.

Glenaire Fisheries, Coach Road, Baildon, has been given a one food hygiene rating published by the Food Standards Agency this week, following inspections on January 17, 2022.

The shop was told major improvement is necessary.

Glenaire Fisheries was given a rating of improvement necessary for its hygienic food handling, which includes with food preparation, cooking and storage.

In the cleanliness of facilities category, it was rated as improvement was necessary.

For management of food safety, it was also rated as major improvement was necessary.

The shop received a three-star rating at its last inspection in March 2021.

Karl Hughes, owner of Glenaire Fisheries, says the shop has been hit hard financially by the pandemic. He says the inspection highlighted structural repairs that needed to be carried out, including loose tiles, a new flooring and a sink that needed replacing

He said: "We have had all the work to press carried out.

“I have owned the shop for 20 years and I have never had a one-star rating before.

“We have been hit really hard by Covid over the last two years.

“I have not had any money to fix the repairs. They have not been cleanliness, but structural things.”

"We are looking to getting five stars. The inspectors have been back in this week and we have ticked all of the boxes."

The inspections are carried out by the local authority and findings are updated on the FSA website whenever there is a new inspection.
