A CHALLENGE has been made over the prison sentences for two men jailed after a terrifying robbery which saw a hair salon owner and her customer injured in a violent attack

Aaron Bonner and Royston Thomas received prison sentences totalling 11 years earlier this month, but now the Attorney General has been asked to review them under a scheme for lenient sentences.

The duo barged into Fresh Hair Salon in Bonegate Road, Brighouse, to demand money and seize the cash drawer and a handbag, Bradford Crown Court was told.

One of the men took hold of the owner by the jumper and pulled her around. The second man then demanded money and when an 87-year-old customer made for the door to get help, he flung her to the floor fracturing her hip.

The robbers made off with her handbag and the salon’s cash drawer containing up to £100.

Bonner, 43, of Celandine Avenue, Huddersfield, and Thomas, 37, of Gilbert Grove, Crosland Moor, Huddersfield, pleaded guilty to the robbery.

Bonner admitted possession of a small knife he had on him when he was apprehended. He was imprisoned for five years.

Thomas pleaded guilty to having £80 of heroin and £105 of crack cocaine on him. He went on to rob an elderly woman in the street. He was jailed for a total of six years.

The Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme allows members of the public to ask for certain sentences to be reviewed. If the Attorney General believes the sentence is too low, the case can be referred to the Court of Appeal for it to be looked at again.
