This month, family-run Czajka Care Group, which has five care and nursing homes across West Yorkshire, celebrated Dignity Action Day.

Dignity Action Day is an annual event for health and social care workers and members of the public to uphold people’s rights to dignity, and to provide a memorable day for people who are living in care homes and nursing homes.

Czajka Care Group’s managing director, Konrad Czajka, said: “Each of our homes have dignity champions, who are responsible for promoting confidence, respect, positive self-esteem and person-centred care. All these principles are at the cornerstone of everything we do at our homes. We live and breathe these principles at every level of our company, and that translates into the care our wonderful residents receive.

“Dignity is achieved in many different ways, but one the most important things is for residents to feel listened to – their voice is the one that matters, and it is the one that must be heard. That is why we always make sure our residents have plenty of choice and say in their care. From the type of food they like to eat, and where and when they want to eat it, to how they want to decorate and furnish their rooms. We provide plenty of choice when it comes to activities and outings too, with people able to join in or sit out of any of our crafts, gardening, musical and entrainment activities.

“We continually get regular feedback from our residents and their families, which is essential in creating a positive environment, where everyone receives a person-centred approach to their care. That’s why so many of our residents feel happy, because they are instrumental in the decisions that are made about their care and wellbeing.”

Czajka Care Group is owned and run by Konrad Czajka and his sons Dominic and Daniel. The dedicated team at Czajka provides respite care, short-breaks, day care, full-time care and palliative care for people aged 65 and over at Fairmount Nursing Home and Brookfield Care Home in Nab Wood, Shipley and Currergate Nursing Home in Steeton and Beanlands Nursing Home in Cross Hills, between Skipton and Keighley.

Czajka Care Group also owns and runs Staveley Birkleas Nursing Home - the specialist nursing home in the North - which cares for young people from the age of 18 through to 64, who have a variety of needs including amputees, people with brain injuries, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neuron Disease, Huntington’s, Epilepsy and many other complex conditions.

Konrad added: “As part of Dignity Action Day, our fabulous home managers and activity coordinators organised lots of activities including writing messages on the leaves of the digna-trees and our residents also enjoyed a special afternoon tea. It was a great way to remind everyone of the importance of dignity every day.”
