PLANS to convert a hairdressers into a further consultation room for a village's GP practice have been approved.

The application will see an existing salon on the first floor of the building converted into part of the existing doctors surgery, which is spread across the ground and first floor.

It means the Wellington House Branch Surgery in Bond Street, Birstall, will take over the full floorspace, and it also includes a two-storey rear extension to the building.

The property sits in the heart of Birstall village centre, surrounded by shops, hairdressers, cafes, restaurants and takeaways.

In granting planning permission for the conversion, Kirklees Council said the loss of the salon "would not significantly harm the vitality or viability" of the village, and that the changes would not have a detrimental impact on neighbouring properties.

Planning officers added the plans "safeguard the character" of the building and "preserve and enhance" the area.
