THE Yorkshire Party has called on a Tory Peer to apologise and branded him a “hypocrite” after he tweeted he feared the county was full of “leftist whingers begging for handouts”.

Conservative member of the House of Lords Baron Moylan, handed a peerage in September 2020, said he was coming on a trip to the county before slandering the people of God’s Own County.

He said: “I’m going to Yorkshire for a short break next week. Everything I’ve read makes me fear I’m going to find it transformed into a county of leftist whingers begging for handouts.

“Let’s hope that’s not the case.”

His incendiary comments have sparked outrage in Yorkshire, and now Bob Buxton, leader of the Yorkshire Party, has called on him to apologise for his comments.

He also branded the Peer a hypocrite for “accusing the hard working people of Yorkshire of begging when he’s been given the greatest handout of all, a peerage”.

Mr Buxton said: “Yorkshire taxpayers deserve a fair share from the taxes they pay, yet for decades our transport, education and many other services have received much less funding per person than London and the Southeast. A fair share is not a ‘handout’.

“There is no will from the Tories to change this, not when our rail projects are cancelled, so they can afford the ever-increasing costs of Crossrail and approved parts of HS2 - to say nothing of the £29 billion per year of Government losses to fraud, which the Conservatives have allowed to happen.

“The Conservatives have provided better funding to criminals than to Yorkshire.

“Every week our argument is proved by the Tories: fair funding can come only with real devolution, via a Regional Parliament for Yorkshire.

“Lord Moylan’s crass comments also remind us of the arrogance that may arise from having an unelected and unaccountable upper chamber, where the privileged have jobs for life.

“Surely, in the 21st century, the upper house should be elected and accountable to voters.”

“The Yorkshire Party calls on Lord Moylan to apologise and for Tory MPs in Yorkshire to condemn his comments.”

Baron Moylan was a top adviser to Primer Minister Boris Johnson while he was the Mayor of London on airports and Crossrail 2, and also served as deputy chair of Transport for London.

He also worked in the Foreign Office in South Africa before working as a merchant banker and also being a councillor in London.

He became a member of the House of Lords in September 2020, just over a month after his former boss Mr Johnson became Prime Minister.
