MOTORISTS are being urged to slow down and take it steady on the motorways today by police who have attended a number of crashes.

Traffic cop Martin Willis has pleaded with drivers to check their speed and drive more carefully with heavy rain and windy conditions battering the district and motorways in West Yorkshire.

He said on Twitter he had already attended three crashes on the motorways in the county this morning and has been called to more this afternoon.

Heavy rain and wet roads are making driving conditions worse and the roads more treacherous, and PC Willis reminded drivers that the easiest way to stay safe and avoid crashing is to simply slow down.

He tweeted at 11.21am: “It's looking like rain all day. We've already had three collisions this morning on the motorway network in West Yorkshire.

“A simple and effective way to avoid becoming another collision statistic… SLOW DOWN and drive to the conditions. Your vehicle can't defy the laws of physics!”

This was followed by another message at 1.51pm when he had attended another crash on the motorways, this time on the northbound stretch of the M606

He said: “Keeping me busy today! Please slow down.”

The first post was accompanied by a photo of a grey BMW with its front end caved in following a smash, while the second tweet showed a red car which again appeared to be a BMW.

Somehow the second car had smashed into safety barriers on a straight piece of road, taking out a large section of barriers leaving debris strewn in the hard shoulder, showing the perils of driving at high speeds in the rain.
