YORKSHIRE is not known for its snowy mountains or icy conditions.

Despite this, a quartet of sportspeople are aiming to do the region proud in the upcoming Winter Olympics.

The Beijing Games officially begin tomorrow and will last for 16 days.

Here are four names you should keep an eye on over the next fortnight:

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Katie Ormerod (Brighouse) - Snowboarding

The Winter Olympian with the closest ties to our patch is aiming to build on her greatest achievement - becoming the first British snowboarder in history to win a World Cup title.

She recently told the T&A: “I’m going in with a strong mindset of there being no real pressure and not trying to think of the overall result.

“Just qualifying for the Olympics was a feat in itself, so if I make it to the finals of either event, that’s a bonus, and if I get a podium, that’s an even bigger bonus.”

Ormerod, 24, will be taking part in the Slopestyle (qualification: February 5, 2.45-4.47am, finals: February 6, 1.30-2.49am) and Big Air (qualification: February 14, 1.30-3.45am, finals: February 15, 1.30-2.35am) events in Beijing.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Ross Whyte (York) - Curling

Back in October, Whyte was named among the six curlers going to the Olympics in 2022.

The 23-year-old has medalled at the World Championships and European Championships in the past.

Whyte is joined in the squad by Bruce Mouat, Grant Hardie, Bobby Lammie, Hammy McMillan and Jen Dodds.

They began their journey on February 10 at the round robin stage against Italy (6.05am).

After that they will play eight other nations in an attempt to reach one of the semi-finals on Feb 17. The gold medal game (6.05am) is two days later.

James Woods (Sheffield) - Freestyle Skiing

In his third appearance at the Olympics, Woods, 30, will want to go one step further and grab a medal following fifth and fourth placed finishes in Sochi and Pyeongchang.

The former world champion competes in the Big Air (qualification: February 7, 4.30-7.44am, final: February 9, 3-4.05am) and Slopestyle (qualification: February 14, 4.30-6.32am, final: February 15, 1.30-2.50am) events this time out.

Bradford Telegraph and Argus:

Katie Summerhayes (Sheffield) - Freestyle Skiing

Summerhayes is also hoping it will be third time lucky after finishing seventh at Sochi and Pyeongchang.

The 26-year-old will represent Team GB in the Women's Big Air (qualification: February 7, 1.30-3.44am, final: February 8, 2-3.05am) and Slopestyle (qualification: February 13, 2-4am, final: February 14, 1.30-2.49am).
