A GAMBLING company has revealed plans to open a new Bradford branch in an empty unit on the city's oldest street.

Merkur runs venues across the country, and has a "Cashino" venue in Shipley and Keighley.

The company will soon be opening a Merkur Slots unit at 43 Ivegate - a former Coral bookmakers located above one of the entrances to the Sunbridgewells complex.

The move was revealed after Merkur applied to Bradford Council for a bingo premises license for the unit. If approved it would allow the venue to host bingo from 9am to midnight.

People have until February 17 to comment on the licence application.

The company says the branch will create at least eight jobs.

Merkur says its Slots venues emphasise "low stakes gaming."

A Merkur spokesperson said: “We are looking forward to returning a vacant unit back to commercial use, ensuring it once again contributes to the local economy.

"The venue will create new jobs and represents much-needed high street investment at a challenging time.

"Our Merkur Slots venues are where people come to enjoy a game of bingo or slots and we look forward to playing an active role in the local community.”
