AS the average house price in the UK hits £242,000 following a 7.4 per cent year on year rise, we’ve taken a look at what this can get you in Bradford compared with other towns and cities.

With the help of property site Zoopla, we can show you how much you can get for your money in the district and how it compares to other parts of the country.

The current average house price is 7.4 per cent higher than in January 2021, following the housing market’s biggest New Year bounce in five years, with buyer demand increasing by 49 per cent.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, average prices have gone up by 8.5 per cent, the sixth fastest growing region in the country.

In Bradford, for £240,000 – meaning you have £2,000 spare for decorating – you can get a five-bedroom detached house in the historic Thornton village.

The recently converted mill building, in Woodlands Close, has five good sized bedrooms, three bathrooms, an integrated garage and driveway, and is fully carpeted throughout, from the entrance hall, open plan living space with modern fittings, and a dressing room or home office.

In the heart of Thornton there’s plenty of shops, cafes, pubs and country walks right on the doorstep of the superb family home.

Compare this huge family home to what £242,000 gets you in the London borough of Croydon – and most of London, for that matter.

For all that cash you can get a one bedroom first floor flat. It has an average-sized lounge, a tiny kitchen and even smaller bathroom, and one good-sized double bedroom.

It does have a massive rear garden with off-street parking, but that is shared with the residents in the other three flats based in the semi-detached building.

It’s even worse in Brighton, where you will only get a studio flat for that money, meaning you don’t even have a separate bedroom.

Bang in the city centre, it’s a stone’s throw from all the shops, bars and nightlife you could need and also a short walk from the beach. It’s listed as a luxury flat and said to be “highly sought”, plus you get a concierge.

However it’s only a leasehold – meaning expect extra charges for ground rent and maintenance fees – and it’s a studio, so you have to cook, sleep, and live in the same space.

It’s a similar story in Surrey, although you do get an extra bedroom in your flat, and the living/dining area and kitchen are a touch bigger. It does come with an allocated parking spot, an en-suite for one bedroom, and a shared communal garden.

But you don’t get a great deal for your £242,000, especially compared with what’s on offer in Bradford.

In Gloucestershire you can get a three-bed semi in a nice little village on the edge of the Forest of Dean, with a small garden, and it’s the same story in Pocklington, North Yorkshire, where you can get a three-bed semi on a new-build estate for the national average, and it’s the same story in Cardiff, where you can get a good-sized family home complete with big bay windows and good links into the centre of the Welsh capital.

There is also a three-bed semi up for grabs on the Isle of Wight, but it comes with a catch, you have to be over 60 and it’s on offer under a lifetime lease plan.

In Swindon you get a bit less for your money, with £242k stretching to a two-bed terraced house; an 18th Century cottage with many original featured retained, and has front and back gardens and is walking distance from local amenities.

In Redruth Cornwall you only get two beds for £242,000 too, but you’ll get a detached home for that money.

It has large driveways and an isolated rural location, and also has a number of original features, but it does need a fair bit of modernisation to bring it into the 21st Century.

Zoopla recommend it would be great as a retirement escape to the country, or as a money spinning holiday let.
