TOUGHER measures are being demanded to slam the brakes on speeding motorists across Keighley.

The town's MP, Robbie Moore, has raised the issue in Parliament – and met Home Office ministers to discuss potential action.

He is calling for police to be given more support in their battle to crack down on law-flouting drivers.

The problem of speeding in one area of Keighley – Fell Lane – has been described as "disgraceful" by Mr Moore, who's been contacted by several concerned residents.

But he says issues aren't limited to a single neighbourhood.

"I have contacted Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Police raising concerns on several occasions and have discussed this problem in Parliament," he said.

"Tougher actions are needed against the perpetrators of speeding in Keighley, who have absolutely no respect for our town or the wider community. This must mean stronger enforcement rules to support the police when they catch people driving recklessly."

Town mayor Councillor Julie Adams says speeding is a "major problem" across the area.

However she adds that the police are "doing their utmost" to tackle it.

She said: "Myself and the other two ward councillors for Fell Lane and Westburn have had a speed indicator device installed on Fell Lane to warn drivers, and this device also collects data which can be used by the highways department to determine what further actions need to be taken.

"Also, a survey is running on Keighley Town Council’s website seeking feedback on speeding in general around Keighley. This feedback will be passed on to the police and other relevant agencies in the hope action can be taken."

Inspector John Barker, of Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said it took speeding and anti-social vehicle use seriously and that tackling it was a priority.

He added: "Measures taken include the deployment of officers on Speedwatch – including the use of speed indication devices for education purposes and the deployment of pro-laser for enforcement action.

"In the past week we have undertaken nine separate Speedwatch deployments at various locations across Keighley – locations raised as areas of concern by residents, the MP and councillors. This included Fell Lane, which will continue to be one of the locations that we deploy to.

"This work is above and beyond any deployments of district or force resources, for example Operation Steerside and the roads policing unit.

"I would urge anyone who has specific locations of concern in respect of speeding or anti-social driving to make contact with us or Bradford Council highways department."

A Bradford Council spokesperson said: "We are working with local councillors and the police to assess and address this issue of speeding.

"So far we have installed speed monitors which will pinpoint potential problem areas and we will work together with our partners to develop solutions to any problems we identify."
