A MAN has been jailed after terrorising a pregnant woman and her partner with an axe in a road rage incident.

Jamie Edward Robertson, 38, approached the couple's car on Edderthorpe Street in Bradford, on May 21, last year, and initially shouted at the driver to get out of his car, while trying the door handle.

Bradford Crown Court heard how he went back to his van and returned with an axe and proceeded to strike the driver's door.

The passenger in the car, who was six month's pregnant at the time, later told how she feared for her life and that of her unborn child.

Robertson, of Heath Road, Bradford, admitted possessing an offensive weapon, and was jailed for 15 months.

Recorder Joanne Kidd described his actions as "behaving in a disgraceful manner".

She added that despite his actions there had been no physical injury to the couple in the car.

In his defence it was said that his actions stemmed from a road rage incident where the defendant effectively lost his temper. It was said that the axe was part of his work tools.

"He accepts he becomes angry quite quickly and he wants to manage that better," she said.
