A VEHICLE reported as "suspicious" to police still had its engine running and contained a slumbering driver with open beer bottles next to him.

Officers from West Yorkshire Police's Leeds North-West Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) received a call about a "suspicious vehicle" on Spen Road, in the Weetwood area of Leeds.

They went to the area and found the vehicle, which still had its engine running.

Inside, they discovered the driver, who was asleep, and officers also spotted open beer bottles next to him.

Police conducted a road-side breath test and the male driver's reading was over the drink-drive limit.

Officers arrested the man and he was taken to Elland Road Police Station.

The man was charged and will appear before court.

The Leeds North-West NPT shared the news on its Facebook page this morning.

The full post said: "Officers from your Neighbourhood Policing Team were informed of a suspicious vehicle on Spen Road.

"As they arrived they found the driver asleep, the engine was on and they spotted some open beer bottles next to him.

"The driver provided a sample of breath and was found to be over the limit.

"He was arrested and taken to Elland Road Police station, he has since been charged and will appear before the court."
