A BRADFORD school has been rated 'good' by Ofsted for the first time in its history after a "long journey".

Inspectors visited Appleton Academy, Wyke, on November 3 and 4 last year, and judged it to be 'good' in all areas.

The school, which is run by Exceed Academies Trust, was told to improve by the education watchdog in 2016.

It has now turned its fortunes around and has received praise for being an "inclusive and friendly school" where "leaders have high expectations of pupils".

The report said: "The school is calm and purposeful. Leaders have improved the curriculum in many subjects. Pupils enjoy learning here.

"As a result, pupils are achieving well in a wide range of subjects."

It added: "The Trust, governors and senior leaders have a clear vision for the school.

"They have improved many aspects of the school including the quality of education that pupils receive.

"Senior leaders have revised the school’s curriculum so that it is ambitious for all pupils including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities."

Inspectors said staff "go the extra mile" to support the personal development of pupils, while their physical and mental health are also well supported.

"Pupils feel listened to and they are proud of their school," said the report.

Executive principal Helen Jones said: “We are very proud of the supportive and inspirational community we have created over the last 12 years.

"It is an absolute delight for those of us who work with our children to see them grow, from very young children experiencing school for the first time, to confident young adults venturing out into the world.

"It is thanks to the hard work of pupils, staff, families, Governors and Exceed Academies Trust for the continued support challenge and inspiration that has made Appleton Academy such an extraordinary school."

Duncan Jacques, CEO of Exceed Academies Trust, added: “Appleton has been on a long journey over the last 12 years, and we are delighted that they have now been rewarded with a ‘good’ judgement from Ofsted.

"I would like to thank the pupils for their positive attitudes to learning, respect for one another and their conduct throughout the school day.

"Thank you to all parents for their continuing support for their children and the school and finally I would like to thank our staff for their hard work, determination and willingness to go that extra mile to ensure the very best for the pupils.”

Sally Wike, chair of the school's Local Advisory Board, said: “This wonderful report reflects the amazing achievements of all our pupils and the impact the whole Appleton community has on helping our children to be their best”.
