AN 80-year-old woman was rescued after a fire at her home in Keighley.

A police officer stuck in traffic nearby spotted smoke coming out of the front door of a terraced house in Bradford Road.

The officer contacted a fire crew from Keighley, who attended the scene at 1pm today, alongside other crews from Shipley and Silsden.

The blaze in the living room started after a piece of paper used in an open fire the woman had started fell out, setting alight to other nearby papers, which spread the fire throughout the living room.

Smoke spread throughout the property as doors were open between rooms, a Keighley Fire Station spokesman added.

The woman, who was rescued from the house by the passing police officer, suffered slight smoke inhalation but was treated at the scene by paramedics and did not require hospital treatment.

A Red Cross charity support vehicle was called to the scene in a bid to temporarily rehome the woman as the house was not habitable immediately after the fire due to the smoke which spread.
